Rincon-Vitova Insectaries promotes the use of natural enemies for pest control. Back in 1972 we developed the first mass production of fly parasites. Today hundreds of satisfied users follow our advice for biological fly control using fly parasites.

Fly Parasites for Pasture, Pen, or Poultry House
mucidifurax zaraptor fly parasite What's in the Mix?

Fly parasites are tiny wasps that attack fly pupae. If they weren't common in nature, all our garbage would be covered in thick swarms of flies. There are a number of different species and each one performs differently in different situations.  Spalangia are found in hot, arid conditions because they do a better job of burrowing through dry and crusty surfaces. They are also prized because they attack stable fly pupae as well as housefly pupae.

Besides Spalangia, we grow  Muscidifurax raptorellus that thrives best at Moderate conditions and  produces higher numbers of new wasps. Joining forces with Muscidifurax zaraptor and early- season inclusion of Muscidifurax raptor that are aggressive searchers during cool nights as well as hot days, Rincon-Vitova's cost-effective balance of species addresses needs in different climates and habitats.

Olson sticky ribbon Fly Control on Organic Dairies

Feeding grain and baled hay to animals is more likely to create fly breeding sites, especially in spilled grain and stacks of old damp hay near watering troughs. Good manure and feed clean-up are basic, combined on many dairies with sticky ribbons and baited jug traps including our large metal Sagebrush traps. Our thin, low-profile 1,000 foot ribbon is conveniently deployed from its reel to a take-up reel with a minimum of messy bulk to dispose of.

Herbal fly repellant like Ecto-Phyte from Agri-Dynamics can be sprayed on cows. Essential oils form an aromatic vapor shield that repels flies, immobilizes parasites of animals and birds, and can kill insects on contact. Herbal repellent helps suppress "hotspots" of flies breeding in calf bedding. More below in article about Organic Dairy Conference.

Stable Fly Control
Olson biting fly trap Download New Publication
"Predicting and Controlling Stable Flies on California Dairies" can be downloaded for free. This 11-page publication tells when you are losing money from biting flies bothering the cows. When cows are flicking their tails more than 10 times per minute, it's time to do something. Our Olson traps collect a lot of flies, but this review notes that the replacement sleeves are messy and need to be replaced weekly where it is dusty.

The Bite-Free trap looked good as well as the do-it-yourself 18" square sheets of white CoroPlast corrugated PE plastic painted with Tanglefoot [or Stikem]. The squares are positioned above the ground on stakes. Stable flies are more of a problem in spring since they don't survive temperatures above 86°F.

4th National Organic Dairy Conference in Fortuna
Cow at Alexandre Ecodairy by Ron Whitehurst Cows Need Pasture

The main theme was that organic pasture fertilized with appropriate minerals is the foundation for a profitable herd. Natural, herbal, and homeopathic herd care was introduced. We coached dairy folks about fly control and enjoyed tasty organic meals with meat, eggs and milk from animals fed a mixed pasture that results in lots more omega-3's and conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) (the good fatty acids!)

The farm tour covered some of the 2500 acres of
Alexandre EcoDairy. They put chickens in the cow pasture for fly control. Chickens pull apart cow pats, looking for maggots. They're moved daily in an "eggmobile", a portable roost with nesting boxes, to a new paddock when fly maggots are big enough to eat. The Alexandre's are part of the largest 'organic milk-shed' in California.
